Uttarbanga sambad | Sept 9 , 2015

He is not the well known character Shankar of Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's novel,"Chander Pahar" but a globetrotter from belur, howrah to have summited the highest peak of the Mountains of the Moon. On wednesday at 10 am, Mr. Mukherjee became the first Indian ever to achieve this near impossible feat!
The highest summit of the Mountains of the moon is Mount Stanley, which is at an altitude of 5109m (16762 ft.). The mountain ranges are situated along the borders of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Though Mr. Mukherjee was alone on his expedition to the snow capped mountain Stanley, no amount of impediments could deter him from fulfilling his mission.

Mount Stanley has never been out of reach for the commoners. Henry Morton was the first person to reach an altitude of 10500 feet in 1889. In 1909, the Duke of Abruzzi was the first person to set foot on this peak. He was accompanied by several photographers, geologists, porters and tour guides.
Mr. Mukherjee's journey was fraught with hardships. On 4th September he set out for Mount Stanley from Rubana on foot. Within a span of 6 days he was successful in ascending the peak. This achievement will remain etched in the pages of history in the years to come!!!
