Dream Wanderlust | May 16 , 2025

Subrata Ghosh (45), a mountaineer from West Bengal, India, died near the Hillary Step while descending to Camp 4 after reaching the summit of Mount Everest.

According to his expedition agency, Snowy Horizon Treks and Expedition, Ghosh made a late summit push and reached the top around 2 p.m. yesterday, accompanied by his Sherpa, Champal Tamang. The agency told Dream Wanderlust that during the descent, Ghosh showed signs of severe exhaustion and altitude sickness and eventually refused to continue. He was later found dead near the Hillary Step. However, sources at Base Camp suggest that his body may actually be located above the Balcony.

However, on 15 May, many climbers reached the summit of Everest during the first weather window. Many others are now waiting for the second window, expected on 17–18 May. Earlier, on 14 May, 45-year-old Philipp II Santiago, a member of the same expedition, died at Camp 4 while preparing for his summit push.

Ghosh was part of a three-member team from the Mountaineering Association of Krishnanagar (MAK), along with Rumpa Das and Asim Kumar Mondal. The trio began their expedition from Kolkata on 31 March. Rumpa Das (44) successfully reached the summit on 15 May 2025. Asim Kumar Mondal, however, turned back from Camp 4, abandoning his summit attempt. Both Rumpa and Asim are reported to be safe and are currently descending toward Base Camp.
