Annapurna I Sees First Summits of the Season Amid Avalanche Concerns

Dream Wanderlust | Apr 8 , 2025

Annapurna I marked the first successful summit of the season among Nepal's 8,000-meter peaks. The summit wave began after the first team reached the top on April 6, 2025. Yesterday, nearly 40 climbers successfully summited Annapurna and began their descent to the lower camps.

However, the descent was disrupted by reports of an avalanche that struck the route between Camp 2 and Camp 3 earlier that morning. Most climbers were above the area at the time of the incident, but several Sherpas working lower on the mountain were affected. Sources suggest that at least two Nepalese climbers are reportedly missing. The condition of the descent route remains uncertain following the avalanche.

The first summit success achieved on April 6 came under favorable weather conditions. Peruvian climber Cesar Rosales, part of the Italian CAI Biella team, reached the summit at 9:30 a.m. local time. He was joined by Imagine Nepal team members Dipan Gurung and Phinjo Dorjee Sherpa from Nepal, as well as Chinese climber Zhao YiYi.

However, Annapurna I witnessed multiple slides have occurred in recent days. Just days earlier, on April 4, a serac collapsed between Camp 2 and Camp 3 injuring climber Gian Luca Cavalli, who was later evacuated to Kathmandu for medical treatment.
