Nepal to host the first international photography festival: 'Photo Kathmandu'

PHOTOKTM | Aug 20 , 2015

Nepal is going through massive social, political and economic transitions, particularly in the past few months that have been difficult with the April and May earthquakes. Nepal has left behind the sad memories of the recent devastating earthquake to host the inaugural edition of the international photography festival, PHOTO KATHMANDU. They are presented with unimaginable new challenges. These challenges can only be addressed with new imagination, creativity and open minds. PHOTO KATHMANDU strives to be a platform to have conversations for young, creative new leaders. photo.circle and its partners are organizing PHOTO KATHMANDU. The first edition of the festival will showcase the interaction between photography, history, anthropology and a wide array of the arts. PHOTO KATHMANDU will be running concurrently to, and in collaboration with, Jazzmandu — a unique jazz festival that has been a pillar in contemporary Nepali cultural celebrations for the past decade. PHOTO KATHMANDU is promoting a Special Print Sale to raise funds to contribute towards the rebuilding of heritage sites in Patan, where PHOTO KATHMANDU 2015 will be anchored. All funds raised will go to Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust (KVPT), who will be our implementing partner. The Print Sale features photographs from two archives – Nepal Picture Library and the Peace Corps Nepal History Project.

Theme: TIME
A photograph, created in a fraction of a second, can embrace years and decades, and sometimes, immeasurable expanses of time. Time that is gained or lost; time that records and repeats, challenges and celebrates. Time that is sometimes still and sometimes racing. The first edition of PHOTO KATHMANDU will work closely with a range of family, community and institutional archives that present the Nepali past through images, memories and stories, juxtaposing the past, the present, and the future.

Partners & Sponsors
PHOTO KATHMANDU will partner with a range of key local and international art and cultural entities, further expanding its reach through their platforms and networks, including Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust, Nepal Picture Library, Kazi Studios, l’Alliance Française de Kathmandu and the The Danish Center for Culture and Development.
