Dream Wanderlust | Sept 12 , 2016

Basanta Singha Roy back in Joshimath today. Quits summit plans. Team also returning shortly after eight days at or above the base camp.

On a telephonic conversation with DW, Basanta Singha Roy talks about his expedition.
Q. Why did you have to abandon the summit plans?
A. It was a very long distance from Bagini col and we would have to set up 6 camps. Initially we had estimated around 4 camps. It was more difficult than we had estimated. So we gave up our plans of summit. I just returned back to Joshimath from the Base Camp today. Too much of rockfall was taking place in Baghini col.

Q. When did you reach base camp?
A. On 31st August.

Q. When did you reach Baghini col?
A. On 10th of September

Q. How far did the route opening take place?
A. We had gone up till Bagini col and started descending from the Bagini col to Rhamani glacier. One of my Sherpas sustained a minor injury due to the rockfall.

Q And then?
A. We could not descend down the col.

Q, So, you did not attempt the west wall?
A. No, we had a plan to reach Changabang Glacier crossing Shipton col. It took two camps between base camp and Bagini col. Then Rhamani glacier itself would take two more camps... then Shipton col would take a few more. But unfortunately, we could not reach Rhamani glacier and had to return from Bagini col.

Q. Have all the members of your team returned?
A. It will take two more days for all the members of my team to descend.

Q. Do you have any further plans of ascending Changabang?
A. I have no plans of ascending Changabang as of now.
Q. Thank you so much! Wish your safe return.
