A team from Bengal successfully summits Mount Nun via North face

Dream Wanderlust | July 19 , 2016

A team from Bengal lead by Malay Mukherjee reached the summit of Mount Nun (7135m), the highest peak of Zanskar on 12th July, 2016. The team comprised of Malay Mukherjee, Mount NunSk. Sahabuddin and Kuntal Karar and four Sherpas, viz. Pemba Sherpa,  Pemba Tsiring Sherpa, Beer Bahadur and Purba Sherpa. They successfully summited from the team of 32 climbers. This was a joint venture of the Howrah District Mountaineers and Trekkers Association (HDMTA) and The Metal and Steel factory, Ishapore.  In 2014, similar expedition was undertaken as part of pre-Everest warm up by them. They were forced to return back from near summit for lack of equipment that time. This year on 29th June, the team reached the base camp. After performing a small puja at the basecamp they ferried their load up to Camp-1. From there they moved to Camp-2 and finally to Camp-3. "Weather conditions had deteriorated by then. Pemba Sherpa had advised us to stay at Camp-3 till the exercise of rope fixing was completed. He said it was not advisable to set out for the summit camp in the adverse weather. We stayed at Camp-3 for three days." Mr. Mukherjee informed us. On 12th July they set out for the summit from Camp-3 at 2 a.m. The team reached the summit at 11.45 a.m. on 12th July. "The journey to the peak was very difficult till the summit ridge. Ice had melted and we encountered hard snow in most of the places. We had to perform a lot of ice climbing. It was just a 2.30-3 hours journey from the summit to the summit camp. And we returned back to the base camp on the next day", Mr Mukherjee recounts. He feels that in all probability they are the first civilian Indian team to have reached the summit of Mt. Nun via the North face. Mt. Nun is very frequently ascended by climbers form all around the world. But it is mostly ascended via the conventional route.
